Cross could take a regular landscape and transform it into a warm, vivid and colourful artwork that enables the viewer to dream away to the magical setting of a Cross painting where the sky is filled with purple, yellow, blue and red tones.
Henri-Edmond Cross
When he was 9 years old, his family moved to Lille. This turned out to be the start of his artistic career as his uncle, who also lived there, discovered the creative talent of Henri-Edmond and started to support his artistic development and career both morally and financially.
After studying at Écoles Académiques de Dessin et d'Architecture, Cross headed to Paris, where he found inspiration from artists such as Georges Seurat, with whom he co-founded the Société des Artistes Indépendants which was developed to work as a rival towards the classical art establishment in Paris.
However, despite working with the Neo-Impressionists, Cross did not adopt their style of art until the later part of his career, when he switched to using brighter colours and his own version of pointillism. As a result, we acknowledge his work as some of the most brilliant in art history.
