About The Artwork
The Kalmia plant originates from North America, specifically in Cuba, where it was first discovered. It received its name from the Swedish botanist Carl Von Linné who named it after his friend Pehr Kalm who was the one that collected it and brought it to Linné. Thanks to those findings, our favorite scientist Thornton was able to recreate and label the plant for us to admire.
Robert John Thornton
He was a multidisciplinary man; he studied medicine at the University of Cambridge, but he had a vivid interest in botanical studies as that was often the topic of his study.
He went on to develop his interest in botanical studies to the subject of his lectures that he would use to teach at Guy’s Hospital in London; he even wrote two books on the subject.
"A New Illustration of the Sexual System of Carolus Von Linnæus" & ‘’The British Flora’’ are the two of the books he published, and in his books is where we can find the brilliant botanical artwork that we are presenting today.
The works of Robert John Thornton were and remain excellent depictions of the botanical creatures of the world, and even if the main intention of the works were scientific, there is no denying that the works carry a strong artistic value.
