About The Artwork
''The Girl by the Window'' is a work that serves as an objectification and compilation of Munch's personal experiences as well as his family history. His travels through Europe and especially Paris exposed him to the impressionist art dominating the city, which led him to form friendships with the impressionist painters of Paris and be influenced by their new style of art with heavy and less distinctive art. In combination with his newfound influences, he still carried the baggage of growing up with a constant state of anxiety and fear.
The culmination became ''The Girl by the Window'', a work that depicts a woman staring out at night to the cold and cruel world, and the only thing separating her from the safety of her room and the world outside is the window.

Edvard Munch
The Norweigan artist Munch is perhaps most known for his famous painting "The Scream," but the story behind Munch and his art reaches far beyond the surface. Growing up in a family plagued by mental illness, Munch was terrified of falling ill; this caused him to live in constant states of depression and anxiety.

Despite the struggles in his personal life, Munch continued to educate himself in fine art, adopted a bohemian lifestyle, and was urged by his friends to paint in a way that would allow him to express his genuine emotions and psychological state.

In combination with his travels to Paris, where he met and learned from artists such as Paul Gauguin and Vincent van Gogh, Munch developed a unique style of painting that is clearly identifiable and very much admirable.
