About The Artwork
Degas as a painter, liked to stick to his few favourite subjects, nudes being one of them. As he painted his nude models, he did so with them pretending to be unaware of him to capture a natural and realistic moment of life.
As an artist, he wished to convey the story of life and humanity through the female form and its expressions, either through the organised, composed and formal way of ballet. Or through the raw, erotic emotions of nude portraits.

Edgar Degas
The only thing Degas hated more than the word impressionism was to be called an impressionist. This is ironic as he played a considerable role in developing the art style. Degas wanted to be referred to as a realist. Still, he was a master of depicting subjects in movements just like the great impressionists like Monet, Renoir and Pissarro. Still, unlike them, Degas hated to paint outside and even believed the government should shoot warning shots at those doing it (!)

They expected him to continue that path because he came from a wealthy family. Still, after his high school studies finished, he started working at the Louvre as a copy artist. Still, his father prevailed, and Degas enrolled at the University of Paris to study law but didn't pay much attention to his studies. So instead, he dropped out to study at École des Beaux-Arts.

After finishing his studies, he moved to Italy. He lived in Naples for three years, where he completed portraits of wealthy families before moving back to France to serve in the Franco-Prussian war. He was eventually freed from his military duties and moved to New Orleans to stay with his relatives. Once there, he realised his brother's massive debts, so he decided to sell all his possessions and paintings to pay off his debt. Unfortunately, this made him dependent on the proceeds from his artworks. He thought the classical Salon in Paris didn't work fast enough, so he joined a small new group of artists known as the Impressionists.
