The Le Cirque Corvi print by de Feure is a perfect example of his artistry and exploration of everyday subjects, of which he creates prints and illustrations as a celebration. His use of colour creates images that stand out and allow for radical contrasts.
Georges de Feure
He was born in Paris, but the name he was given by his Dutch father and Belgian mother was not Georges de Feure, but it was Georges Joseph van Sluijters. At age 20, de Feure was one of eleven students admitted to the prestigious art academy Rijkscademie Voor Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam. However, his stint there was very short, and he never completed his studies as he considered himself a very independent person and did not believe that formal art education had anything to give him.
His indiependent nature made him create his own path in the artistic world. However, he was influenced by French artists such as Jules Chéret, who also specilised in creating decorative art posters like de Feure.
de Feure dedicated his artistic life to the decorative arts and theatre design; however, the success and appreciation of his works did not come until after his death, as he died at the age of 75 while living in poverty.
