About The Artwork
A very black and white print by van Hoytema captures the intense look of the two owls as they stare right back at the viewer with their wide, open, and powerful eyes. The owls are surrounded by various elements of nature that artistically add biological diversity.
Theo van Hoytema
His father was the secretary general of the Department of Finance in the Netherlands growing up, so it was natural that he would also go into that field. However, after a short time in an office environment, he realised that it wasn’t his path in life.
Instead, he took drawing classes at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague. Then, to practise his skills, he would go to the natural museum and draw stuffed animals, later becoming the main subject of his art.
After showing his artistic talent in drawing, his uncle helped him get his first commission for illustrations in a scientific journal. He continued to build upon his craft and career and eventually produced the illustrations for H.C Andersen’s The Ugly Duckling.
After a turbulent personal life and failing health, he still managed to produce the illustrations that made him well known in the art world and was rewarded with a street named after him and a statue after his death.
