About The Artwork
Ground Swell, despite its bright colors and serene subject, echoes Hopper's themes of loneliness and escape. The picture's blue sky, sun-kissed characters, and rolling water strike a peaceful note. However, the apparent disengagement of the figures and their preoccupation with the bell buoy at the center of it all call into question that initial sense of serenity. The buoy is the only dark element in a sea filled with blues and whites. It confronts the small, empty catboat. The presence of the buoy in this picture is a sign of danger. Its purpose is to sound a warning in case of imminent danger or unseen danger. This sense of disturbance is reinforced by the blue sky cirrus clouds, which are often harbingered for approaching storms. Hopper refused to explain his paintings, but the signs of danger may be a reference to a more serious disturbance. In August 1939, World War II broke out in Europe during Hopper's time at Ground Swell.
Edward Hopper
He was an American realist painter/printmaker. Although he is best known for his oil paintings and etchings, he was also a skilled watercolorist and printmaker. Hopper created subdued drama from commonplace subjects, 'layered with poetry meaning,' encouraging narrative interpretations. Hopper was known for his "complete verity" in portraying America. Josephine Nivison, a fellow artist, was a significant contributor to his career as both a life model and a creative partner.
