About The Artwork
When the sun rises and hits Mount Fuji at certain moments in the autumn morning, it turns the mountain red. As part of his 36-work series of Mount Fuji, Hokusai wanted to create and share a diverse body of work representing Japan's highest mountain in all its different looks.

Katsushika Hokusai (葛飾 北斎)
Hokusai was one of the most influential and important players in developing the Japanese woodblock painting style of Ukiyo-e to include landscape and nature motives with his Mount Fuji series, which consisted of 36 depictions of the iconic Japanese mountain.

Born in the 1700s, there weren't any Ipads for parents to put in front of their kids when they needed entertainment, so instead, his father sent him to the public library; this is where the seed for his artistic career was planted.
He started reading books made of woodblocks to spend his time, which later led to him becoming an apprentice at a woodcarver for four years.
After gaining experience in woodcarving, he joined a woodcarving studio as an artist at 18; working there laid the foundation of his future works, consisting of over 30,000 pieces (!) made out of wood.

Hokusai's career remains one of the most important and influential in art history.
His works have inspired artists worldwide and have stood the test of time and geography as his artwork's timeless beauty and genius has remained popular worldwide for over 200 years.
