About The Artwork
Few artists had the ability to capture nature's gift in such a beautiful way as Morris. His ability to gather and collect fruits in a print with branches with strong radiating colors is unique to his artistic style and nothing short of impressive!
William Morris
Looking at Morris's incredible works and patterns, one would expect that he has dedicated his whole life to only creating beautiful designs. But instead, his list of occupations stretches far and beyond, some of them being; textile designer, poet, artist, novelist, architectural conservationist, printer, translator, and socialist activist.
However, his exposure to the art world had to wait until he started studying at the University of Oxford, where he met his soon-to-be closest friends. They would help him shape his political opinions about art and to nourish his artistic talent.
Together they started the decorations company Morris, Marshall, Faulkner & Co, which specialized in patterns and decorations.
To understand the longevity and timelessness of Morris's works, you may be surprised to hear that his patterns are still being sold as decorations in London today, over 150 years after their creation.
Furthermore, during his time at Oxford, he also joined the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood with the same people he would go on to start a decorations firm with. A group that wanted to distance themselves from the industrialization and modernization of art and return to art as a craft.
Morris continued his artistic work after Oxford. Whether it be in the creation of new patterns for decorations or whether it would be writing a book like The Wood Between the Worlds that went on to influence the likes of C.S. Lewis and his creations of Narnia as well as J.R.R. Tolkien and his writing of Lord of The Rings.
William Morris was an artist in every aspect of his career today, and we are proud to keep his work and legacy alive here at Stockholm Art House.
