About The Artwork
The majestic peacock stands tall and proud with its feathers as they shine bright against the green background working in perfect harmony.
Ohara Koson (小原古邨)
Born on the tropical island of Honshu in Japan, Koson was constantly exposed to the elements of nature with its flowers, plants, animals and landscapes. This experience and exposure later helped shape his path as an artist when he moved to Tokyo to pursue his artistic education and development.
However, despite his love for nature's findings, Koons's career started with him creating woodblock prints of the Russo-Japanese war from 1904-1905. However, after the war ended, he returned to making his prints in the style of Ukiyo-e that we today know and love him for.
But it wasn't until he started working with the publisher Watanabe Shōzaburō that his work started gaining international recognition. After that, he was a driving force in exporting the finest Japanese prints abroad to gain worldwide exposure for their incredible works.
Today his works are held in over 15 museums, such as the British Museum, the Rijksmuseum and the Harvard Museum of Art, to name a few.
